THE TOP QUESTIONS

Q: We heard a loud noise in the garage and have not been able to open the garage door since. What could be wrong with the door?

A: Most likely you have a broken spring. The other problem may be a broken cable. Whatever the problem may be, it should be repaired by an experienced and qualified garage door service technician. Contact Durham Doors for an estimate.

Q: I have a double door with two springs and one of the springs is broken. Should I change the one broken spring or both?

A: Durham Doors recommends that you change both springs at the same time, since both springs have been under the same amount of stress each time the door has been opened and closed. In most cases it will cost less to have both springs changed at the same time than if you only had one spring changed at a time.

Q: How can I program my garage door opener to work with my HomeLink® system in my car?

A: Durham Doors recommends that you visit the following website for specific directions: http://www.homelink.com/home/welcome

Q: While we were closing the overhead garage door something caused the door to stop halfway and now the door is hanging crooked in opening. What is wrong with the door?

A: Most likely one of the garage door cables has come off. The cables may still be under spring tension and should not be touched without the proper knowledge and tools to make the repair. Contact Durham Doors for an estimate.

Q: Why does my garage door reverse as it is closing?

A: The sensors attached to the track protect the door opening with an invisible beam. Clear any obstruction from between the safety sensors. Check each sensor for a steady glowing indicator light (usually green and yellow). If one of the indicator lights is flickering, the sensors may be slightly misaligned.

Q: The bottom section of our garage door was damaged. Can sections be replaced?

A: Yes, any section can be replaced as long as the section designs are still available. When there are two sections, in most cases, the cost plus the labour to replace them may be close to the cost of a brand new garage door that will include all new tracks, springs, and hardware.

Q: Why would I want a belt drive opener?

A: Belt drive openers are the smoothest, most quiet openers and have an excellent reliability record. They are recommended for use whenever noise and vibration are important considerations. If there is a living space above or near the garage, the belt drive openers will minimize the amount of noise generated by the opener.

Q: Can I use a compact fluorescent light bulb in my opener?

A: You may use fluorescent or “energy saver” light bulbs. Be aware that certain compact fluorescent light bulbs may transmit radio frequency interference. Test the range of your remote before and after installing this type of bulb. If you notice a decreased range with your remote or your remotes only work once the light turns off, you will need to replace the bulbs with the standard size A19 bulbs.

Q: Why would I want a chain drive opener?

A: Chain drive openers have been in production for the longest amount of time, and offer dependable performance year in and year out.

Q: I can hear my garage door opener working but nothing is happening. What's going on?

A: Most likely the nylon gear is stripped and needs to be replaced. Contact Durham Doors for a free estimate.

Q: Why should I choose an insulated door if my garage is not insulated?

A: There are two main reasons to consider an insulated garage door. First, a garage door opening is very large. Insulated doors will help to reduce the transfer of heat or cold air into your garage. Second, an insulated door is much stronger than a non-insulated or polystyrene door. Contact Durham Doors for a free in-home estimate.

Q: What are the benefits of a steel door versus a wood door?

A: Steel doors require less maintenance than a wood door. A wood door, over time, will deteriorate, rot and need to be painted often adding stress to your spring(s) and garage door opener. Durham Doors will gladly come to your home to show you the difference.

Q: I have a one-piece door now. Can I replace it with a sectional door?

A: Yes. Durham Doors can install a sectional door for you. Depending on the construction of your garage, other modifications might be necessary.

Q: I have a custom-built garage that has an unusual door size. Are special door sizes available?

A: Yes. Durham Doors offers residential doors in widths between 4′ and 20′ and in heights between 6′ and 10′ in 3″ increments.
